How to get a cheap ride in Karachi (Karachi mein sasti ride kaise lein)
· Drivio
Getting around Karachi does not have to be expensive. Most of the money people overpay goes on three things: the wrong vehicle for the trip, surge pricing at busy hours, and booking one-way rides when they needed a vehicle for the afternoon. Here is how to avoid all three.
1. Pick the smallest vehicle that fits
For one person, a bike is almost always the cheapest option. On Drivio a bike costs Rs 50 base plus Rs 18/km, against Rs 80 + Rs 25/km for a rickshaw and Rs 120 + Rs 38/km for a car. Over the same route the difference is large:
| Trip | Distance | Bike | Rickshaw | Car |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gulshan-e-Iqbal → Saddar | ~12.3 km | Rs 271 | Rs 388 | Rs 587 |
| DHA Phase 6 → Dolmen Mall Clifton | ~4.4 km | Rs 129 | Rs 190 | Rs 287 |
| Jinnah International Airport → Saddar | ~18.4 km | Rs 381 | Rs 540 | Rs 819 |
Estimates from the live Drivio rates using straight-line distance × 1.3; the app prices your actual route.
2. Avoid surge pricing
Many apps raise fares when demand is high — rain, office hours, Eid. Drivio does not use surge pricing, so a 6pm ride costs the same as a 3pm ride over the same distance. If you travel at rush hour every day, this alone adds up to a lot over a month.
3. Two or three people? Take a rickshaw
A rickshaw fits two or three passengers and costs much less than a car. Split between friends, it is often cheaper per head than three separate bikes.
4. Pool on routes you travel often
If you travel the same route regularly — to university, to the office — a pool seat lets you pay for one seat instead of a whole car. On Drivio, riders publish pool trips in advance and you book the seat going your way.
5. Rent by the hour instead of several rides
Shopping, a wedding, or errands across the city? Four separate car rides can cost more than keeping one car for the afternoon. Drivio car rentals start at Rs 500/hr without fuel. Book ahead — same-day rentals add 26%.
6. Skip AC when you can
AC adds 20% on cars and vans. In winter, or on a short trip, leaving it off is an easy saving.
7. Know the fare before you get in
Bargaining at the roadside usually ends with you paying more than the trip is worth. A fare calculated from distance — and shown before you book — removes the guesswork. Try the fare estimator on the Drivio homepage with your own route.
